if there is such a thing, then what guarentees your placement in either? does attending church on a weekly basis and claiming to be a christian mean you are labeled a "good person"? am I doomed to burn for all eternity because I'm not a believer in the christian idea of god?

Yah, they are an awesome kick ass band made by Ronnie James Dio and Black Sabbath. I am sure Dio would say you're a good person.

There's no proof, so I don't believe in such things.

You are doomed. But think about it. Do you really wanna spend an eternity with these folks?

If heaven and hell does exist then theres one question that we should really think about. If good people go to heaven, then in whose eyes do we need to be seen as a good person? The way I see it is that if you think you have done a good deed, then maybe you want to think about how good that deed really was.
God is love, and God wouldn't banish his children to hell for not going to church every sunday. A few random acts of kindness are sure to help :-)

Many of our churches indeed say that you are doomed to Hell unless you follow that church, and no other. The Roman Catholic Church recently reaffirmed that there is no way to heaven, except through their church. Christian doctrine at one point said that all non-christians (including everyone in the New World, before the Europeans showed up) was doomed to Hell, if they were not Christian after Christ was revealed.

Now the Calvinists say that your fate is determined before you are born. Nothing you do on this world, of good or evil, will alter your fate, since God already knows everything.

Others say it is entirely in your hands, your free will determines it. Personally, I refuse to believe that God is a petty tyrant, condemning unbaptised children and undiscovered savages.

The extreme of this point of view are the Universalists, who belive everyone, no matter what, will go to Heaven.

well, if you want to go to heaven, you have to be a christian. It doesnt mean that you are going to heaven if u just go to church, u have to do things like have sex after marrige, read the bible, dont sin, pray to god, and make sure you ask god for forgiveness if you sin.(ALWAYS FOLLOW THE TEN COMANDMENTS!)

Thats how you go to heaven (if you wanna go to hell, just sin)

We aren't Christians because we are good people. We are Christians because we are sinners and very bad people and we needed to be saved by the blood of Jesus. Just going to church and saying your a christian doesn't mean you are one. Your not saved by good works or by going to church.

But we are saved through FAITH by grace and NOT of WORKS lest any man should boast.

In fact the bible says during judgment a lot of people are going to cry out to him (God) "Lord, Lord" but He will say to them "Depart from me, for I never knew you." It's quite a sad thing really. I've even heard people say "Well I'm a Christian I think...... I must be my parents were Christians." That does NOT make you a Christian. The only way you can be saved is to admit you have sinned (See the ten commandments) ask for forgiveness from God, and believe on his name. Then, if you are a Christian you should go to church and do "good works". It's not the other way around.

If you have accepted Jesus Christ into your life and have a personal relationship with him, you are a Christian and are going to heaven. In order to do this, you need to be in church and read the Bible to know all about what God has done for you.

If you want to become a Christian you need to follow the ABC"s :

A- Admit to God that you are a sinner
B- Believe that Jesus is God's son
C- Confess to God your faith in Him

There is such a thing, but many folks are under the mistaken notion that it just all or nothing. Jesus Christ said, "In my Father's house are many mansions" and the apostle Paul spoke of the degrees of heaven comparing one to the glory of the sun, another to the moon and other to the stars.

Here is a bit more depth for your answer:

    Kingdoms of Glory
Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all people will be resurrected. After we are resurrected, we will stand before the Lord to be judged according to our desires and actions. Each of us will accordingly receive an eternal dwelling place in a specific kingdom of glory. The Lord taught this principle when He said, "In my Father's house are many mansions" (John 14:2).

There are three kingdoms of glory: the celestial kingdom, the terrestrial kingdom, and the telestial kingdom. The glory we inherit will depend on the depth of our conversion, expressed by our obedience to the Lord's commandments. It will depend on the manner in which we have "received the testimony of Jesus."

Celestial Kingdom - The celestial kingdom is the highest of the three kingdoms of glory. Those in this kingdom will dwell forever in the presence of God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. This should be your goal: to inherit celestial glory and to help others receive that great blessing as well. Such a goal is not achieved in one attempt; it is the result of a lifetime of righteousness and constancy of purpose.

The celestial kingdom is the place prepared for those who have "received the testimony of Jesus" and been "made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood." To inherit this gift, we must receive the ordinances of salvation, keep the commandments, and repent of our sins. It has also been revealed that, "All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God; "Also all that shall die henceforth without a knowledge of it, who would have received it with all their hearts, shall be heirs of that kingdom; For I, the Lord, will judge all men according to their works, according to the desire of their hearts."

From another revelation, we learn that there are three degrees within the celestial kingdom. To be exalted in the highest degree and continue eternally in family relationships, we must enter into "the new and everlasting covenant of marriage" and be true to that covenant. In other words, temple marriage is a requirement for obtaining the highest degree of celestial glory.

Terrestrial Kingdom - Those who inherit terrestrial glory will "receive of the presence of the Son, but not of the fulness of the Father. Wherefore, they are bodies terrestrial, and not bodies celestial, and differ in glory as the moon differs from the sun." Generally speaking, individuals in the terrestrial kingdom will be honorable people "who were blinded by the craftiness of men." This group will include those who rejected the opportunity to receive the gospel in mortality but who later received it in the postmortal spirit world.

Telestial Kingdom - Telestial glory will be reserved for individuals who "received not the gospel of Christ, neither the testimony of Jesus." These individuals will receive their glory after being redeemed from spirit prison, which is sometimes called hell.

    Perdition
Some people will not be worthy to dwell in any kingdom of glory. They will be called "the sons of perdition" and will have to "abide a kingdom which is not a kingdom of glory." This will be the state of "those who know [God's] power, and have been made partakers thereof, and suffered themselves through the power of the devil to be overcome, and to deny the truth and defy [God's] power."

Church is two or more people, so in reality we are at church right now...

Heaven to one is hell to another. Sitting in a building with a lot of others listening to a blow hard that is no better then I is hell to me.

One does not need to believe in the same god nor go to a building to be in "church". Somewhere in are history we have confused church as a building.
The so called religions of today (and yesterday) have been contorted to what we humans can rationalize.
Be happy and believe in whatever you find practical to your own life. When life comes to the last breath, then we all hope to find peace somewhere, if we find peace at all.

There is no way at all that I would let any self-righteous, hate-mongering clergyman let me believe that unless I go to HIS church and pay HIS "taxes" that my "soul" will burn (or not go anywhere at all). Do you know what will ultimately free your "soul"? When you realize that you do not have to believe in anyone's idea of (a)God- not his, theirs, or mine.
